RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING ASSYRIAN AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF CHICAGO ON ITS 100™ ANNIVERSARY
WHEREAS, The Assyrian American Association of Chicago (Shotapota) is celebrating its 100 anniversary this year; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed body has been informed of this notable milestone by the Honorable Patrick O'Connor, Alderman of the 40th Ward; and
WHEREAS, Reverend Joel Warda and Rabbi Pera Benjamin established the Assyrian American Association of Chicago on November 2, 1917. The Association's first President, Sargis Barba, was elected in 1918; and
WHEREAS, The Association sent two delegates to the Paris Conference in 1919: Reverend Warda and Ashur Joseph. They talked about the plight of Assyrians in their homeland of Mesopotamia (Bet Nahrain); and
WHEREAS, The Assyrian American Association of Chicago provides social assistance and creates unity among Assyrian refugees and immigrants; and
WHEREAS, The Association has been led by over sixty distinguished Presidents; and
WHEREAS, The Assyrian American Association of Chicago celebrated its 100th anniversary on Sunday, October 15, 2017, at Crystal Palace Banquets in Mount Prospect, Illinois; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered here this eighth day of November, 2017, hereby congratulate the Assyrian American Association of Chicago (Shotapota) on their 100th anniversary, and we offer our appreciation to them for one hundred years of service to the metropolitan Chicago area.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Assyrian American Association of Chicago as an expression of our esteem.
