RESOLUTION

 

WHEREAS, On Sunday, November 5th, 2017, Sgt. Rory Hehir was recognized as the United States Marine Corps Honoree for the 16th Annual Mayfair Community Salute to American Heroes; and

 

WHEREAS, The City Council has been informed of this recognition by the Honorable Margaret Laurino, Alderman of the 39th Ward; and

 

WHEREAS, Sgt. Rory Patrick Hehir was born on October 12,1984, to James and Linda Hehir, both St. Edward graduates. He attended St. Edward and Palmer grammar schools and was member of Cub Pack 3904, Scout Troop 904, and Explorer Post 2904 achieving the rank of Life Scout; and

WHEREAS, He is a 2003 graduate of Notre Dame High School where he played football and ran track for four years and was Captain of the Swim Team his senior year, a three sport athlete. He attended Oakton Community College for 2 years and joined the Marines in August of 2005; and

 

WHEREAS, Rory graduated from the Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego on October 28, 2005, and from Marine Corps Combat Training in November. Since his aptitude test scores were high, he was sent to "A' School in Pensacola, Florida, where he served in the Base Police Auxiliary Force while waiting for Hurricane Katrina to clear and then began Aviation Ordinance School for training in arming, mounting, and quality assurance with great distinction; and

 

WHEREAS, He completed the course in December, 2006. He then was sent to "C-School" in Cherry Point, North Carolina, for detailed training in the arming and use of ordinance racks, armament and countermeasure loading of the AV-8 Harrier, a fixed wing jet capable of vertical take offs and landings.

 

WHEREAS, In February of 2007, he was assigned as an Aviation Ordinance Systems Tech to Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 13 at Marine Corps Air Station, Yuma, Arizona. Therefater, from March through October 2008, he was deployed to the Fleet Marine Forces, Iraq, with the Harrier Squadron VMA-311 at Al Asad Air Force Base and Al Qua-im Marine Forward Operating Base on the Iraq/Syria border. He worked on and armed the Cobra and Huey helicopters as well as the Harriers and newly developed MV-22 Osprey with a variety of ordinance and countermeasures. He received a Command Commendation for his tireless and expert efforts and perfect safety record in an active combat zone.

 

WHEREAS, He returned to Yuma and then deployed to Marine Forces at Camp Mujuk Pohang, South Korea, from February 2010 to February 2011, where he was Station Weapons Tech in charge of the accounting for and constant safe movement of large amounts of ordinance for security reasons.

 

WHEREAS, After returning from South Korea, he was assigned to MALS 16, MCAS Miramar, California, from March 2011 to January, 2014, where he worked on and armed the MV-22 Osprey, as well as the CH-53 Sea Stallion and Ch-46 Seaknight helicopters.

 

WHEREAS, From January, 2012 to August, 2012, Sgt. Hehir was deployed to Camp Leatherneck/Bastion British AFB in Helmond Province, Afghanistan, where he had an additional significant assignment as Quality Assurance Tech for all aviation ordinance and was charged

 

 

with assuring and signing off on the safety of all weaponry to ensure the safety of the pilots, crew, and aircraft. Once again, Sgt Hehir received a Command Commendation for his tireless and expert efforts and perfect safety record in an active combat zone.

 

WHEREAS, In January of 2014 he was selected as a Marine Drill Instructor and assigned to MCRD San Diego where he completed Dl school and served with 1st battalion Delta Company as a Drill Instructor for over 300 Marine recruits through June of 2016 when he left active duty; and

 

WHEREAS, Rory is married to Lacey Richards of Redding, California, and they have 2 children, Peyton and Bailey. He has 2 brothers, Brendan and Conor and a sister Caitlin McCright. He and , his family have been life-long Mayfair residents; now therefore

 

Be It Resolved, That we, the Mayor and members of the Chicago City Council, gathered here this 8th day of November 2017 do hereby express gratitude for Sgt. Rory Hehir for his many years of service to his country; and
