RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, Lou Krueger was inducted into the Army in 1951, and was deployed to Korea with the 84th Battalion during the Korean War. The 84th was mainly a bridge building outfit, but also built roads, gun emplacements and railheads. Lou was also attached temporarily to the 43rd Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (M.A.S.H.) on the 38th Parallel. He was discharged in 1956 with the rank of Staff Sergeant; and
WHEREAS, After his service to his country, Lou has devoted his life to serving his community. He has lived in Mayfair for sixty years. Throughout that time, he has been an active member of the North Mayfair Improvement Association, serving as President of the group for a time. He was a very active with Mayfair Lutheran Church until its closing. He was especially known for his leadership of youth programs, including being a Cub Master, a Scout Master, and basketball Coach; and
WHEREAS, Lou was a founding member of the Mayfair Veterans Committee, and worked tirelessly to make the Salute to American Heroes the beloved event it is today. He always led the prayers for POW/MIAs at the post-ceremony receptions; and
WHEREAS, He revered all those who served, and he taught the value of service to his own children and grandchildren. He was delighted that he could stay in touch with his grandson Jacob via email during his service in Afghanistan and Iraq. He compared it to the one time during his own service in Korea that he was given the chance to wait in line for hours to make a very brief phone call home; and
WHEREAS, Lou and Billie, his wife of 54 years, had four children- Michael, Timothy, Beth and Peter- and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. It is a testament to how beloved he is that so many of them are joining us here today; now therefore
Be It Resolved, That we, the Mayor and members of the Chicago City Council, gathered here this 8th day of November 2017 do hereby express gratitude for Lou Krueger for his many years of service to his country and commun...
