RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Paul J. Weitz has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 85; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Paul J. Weitz was a pioneering NASA astronaut and the devoted husband of the late Suzanne, nee Berry; and
WHEREAS, Paul J. Weitz was the much-adored father of Matthew and Cynthia to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, Paul J. Weitz was the dear brother of Evelyn; and
WHEREAS, In 1973 Paul J. Weitz served as command module pilot during a 28-day mission of the first crew of Skylab, an orbiting laboratory; and
WHEREAS, Paul J. Weitz was the Commander of the first launch of the space shuttle Challenger in April of 1983; and
WHEREAS, Later in his career, Paul J. Weitz served as Deputy Director of the Johnson Space Center from which he retired in 1994; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Paul J. Weitz serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Paul J. Weitz to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Paul J. Weitz imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this eighth day of November, 2017, do hereby commemorate Paul J. Weitz for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
