RESOLUTION

 

WHEREAS, Almighty God, in His infinite wisdom, called Leola Williams Robinson White, beloved citizen and friend to her community, to her eternal reward on October 16, 2017, beyond the gracious centennial age of 102; and

 

WHEREAS, This esteemed body has been informed of her passing by the Honorable Carrie M. Austin, Alderman of the 34th Ward and Chairman of the Committee on Budget and Government Operations; and

 

WHEREAS, Leola Williams Robinson White, born in Natchez, Mississippi to the late Anna and Claude Williams on April 5,1915, was one of ten children. Leola left school in the fourth grade to work in the cotton fields to lend support to her mother and siblings; and

 

WHEREAS, Leola moved to Chicago in 1946, later marrying the love of her life, Tommie White. She worked on the assembly line at the Young Spring & Wire Company and was a valued employee for 31 years. To earn extra income Leola became an Avon representative and sold beauty products; and

 

WHEREAS, Leola maintained close ties to Natchez, visiting her family a few times a year. In addition, Leola opened her home in Chicago to many relatives and hundreds of others as they journeyed north in search of a better life; and

 

WHEREAS, Leola accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She was the oldest living member of the First Corinthian Missionary Baptist Church, which she joined in 1946. She was President of the Missionary Society for over 47 years; and

 

WHEREAS, Leola was known for her unique and timeless sense of fashion, especially on Sundays; matching her outfits from head to toe. She was also an avid fan of the Chicago Bulls and prayed faithfully for the team's success; and

 

WHEREAS, Leola touched the lives of all who knew her through her love of Christ, dedication to family, kind heart and vivacious spirit. She will be deeply missed, but memories of her inspirational legacy of a life led with dignity and a focus on helping others will live on in those who knew and loved her; and

 

WHEREAS, Leola leaves to cherish her memory, daughter Ann Anderson and granddaughter Jacquie Algee, along with a host of loving family and treasured friends; and

 

WHEREAS, The Bible instructs us "Earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot heal." May this be especially true for your family as you mourn this incredible loss. I pray the White Family be comforted by the many gifts and outpouring of love. God bless and keep you in His embrace; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and Members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled this eighth day of November, 2017, do hereby extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of Leola Williams Robinson White.

 

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution are presented to the family of Leola Williams Robinson White as a sign of our honor and respect.
