, On the late morning of December 6th, 2017, Tower Ladder 34 of the epartment responded to a report of a fire at 6906 South Paxton Avenue. Upon arriving, Fire Department personnel  saw flames and smoke issuing from the rear of a three-story residential building; and

WHEREAS, As Captain/EMT David DiMaggio and Firefighter/EMT Sean Cardio prepared to force open a padlocked basement door to search for victims, they could hear screams coming from within. A man trapped in the basement yelled through the door that he could not get out; and

WHEREAS, Firefighter Cardio and Captain DiMaggio were able to calm and reassure the trapped man, who regained his presence of mind sufficiently to slide a key through the mail slot, enabling the firefighters to unlock and open the door and bring the man out to safety; and

WHEREAS, Having rescued one victim, Captain DiMaggio and Firefighter Cardio plunged into the worsening fire and smoke in the basement to begin their search. In addition to the difficulty of operating in zero visibility, they discovered that the basement was a crammed maze of appliances, bicycles and other stored belongings, which made an effective search a perilous challenge; and

WHEREAS, With the temperature swiftly becoming unbearable, the two firefighters came across a second victim, who had been struck unconscious by the heat and smoke. Captain DiMaggio and Firefighter Cardio, working in tandem under these extreme conditions, were able to drag the man through the clutter outside to safety and an EMS crew; and

WHEREAS, The victim, who was rushed to the hospital by a Fire Department ambulance in critical condition, owes his life to these members of the Chicago Fire Department; and

WHEREAS, Although many members of the Chicago Fire Department contributed their skill and courage to this lifesaving event, Captain DiMaggio and Firefighter Cardio demonstrated unshakeable tenacity, remarkable dedication and cool heads under pressure; and

WHEREAS, The efforts shown by Captain DiMaggio and Firefighter Cardio are in keeping with the finest and highest traditions of the Chicago Fire Department; now, therefore

BE JT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and Members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled this twenty-eighth day of February, 2018, do hereby honor Captain/EMT David DiMaggio and Firefighter/EMT Sean Cardio of Tower Ladder 34 for actions above and beyond the call of duty; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be presented to Captain/EMT David DiMaggio and Firefighter/EMT Sean Cardio, and placed on permanent record in their personnel files, as a token of our honor and esteem.
