RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, His Eminence Karl Lehmann has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 81; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, The son of a teacher and a bookseller, His Eminence Karl Lehmann was born on May 16, 1936 in the southwestern German town of Sigmaringen, Germany; and

WHEREAS, His Eminence Karl Lehmann began his early years as a theological scholar and became a Professor of Theology; and

WHEREAS, In 1983 His Eminence Karl Lehmann was named the Bishop of Mainz at the age of 47, making him the youngest Catholic bishop ever appointed in Germany; and

WHEREAS, His Eminence Karl Lehmann was elevated to Cardinal by Pope John Paul II in 2001; and

WHEREAS, His Eminence Karl Lehmann was President of the German Bishop's Conference from 1987 to 2008 and led the country's more than 23 million Catholics for two decades; and

WHEREAS, Pope Francis accepted the retirement of His Eminence Karl Lehmann at the age of 80; and

WHEREAS, The faithfulness, sacrifice and dedication of His Eminence Karl Lehmann serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, His Eminence Karl Lehmann was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, His Eminence Karl Lehmann imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-eighth day of March, 2018, do hereby commemorate His Eminence Karl Lehmann for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of His Eminence Karl Lehmann.
