RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, Richard Gray has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 89; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

 

WHEREAS, Richard Gray was a renowned Chicago-based art dealer and the loving husband for 65 years of Mary; and

 

WHEREAS, Richard Gray was the much-adored father of Paul, Harry and Jennifer, the grandfather of five and the great-grandfather of one to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and

 

WHEREAS, Richard Gray was the dear brother of Robert and Melvin; and

 

WHEREAS, Raised on the South Side, Richard Gray graduated from Hyde Park High School and attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign before serving his country in the United States Air Force; and

 

WHEREAS, Returning to Chicago in 1952, Richard Gray first worked for his father at a phonograph manufacturer and then at a Michigan resort; and

 

WHEREAS, Richard Gray eventually became interested in the visual arts and rented a space in 1963 at 155 East Ontario Street where he opened his first gallery; and

 

WHEREAS, Richard Gray then established galleries in Chicago and New York and became internationally recognized figure in the art world; and

 

WHEREAS, An individual of great cultural knowledge and generosity, Richard Gray was a benefactor of many Chicago civic organizations, including the Art Institute of Chicago and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra; and

 

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Richard Gray serve as an example to all; and

 

 

WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Richard Gray to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and

 

WHEREAS, Richard Gray will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

 

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Richard Gray imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-seventh day of June, 2018, do hereby commemorate Richard Gray for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Richard Gray.
