8YB&S , On the afternoon of July 18, 2018, Inspector Ismael Cuevas, a proud resident of the City's southwest side for 30 years and employed in the City of Chicago's Department of Buildings for 18 years, was responding to a call for an inspection in the 5900 block of South Prairie Avenue; and
WHEREAS, Upon arriving at the apartment building, Inspector Cuevas proceeded to the second-floor apartment where the 3-1 -1 call originated; and
WHEREAS, Inspector Cuevas knocked on the door and a young boy, about five years old, answered the door. As the door opened, smoke billowed out of the apartment and the inspector felt a blast of heat; and
WHEREAS, Recognizing the imminent danger, Inspector Cuevas sprang into action; and

WHEREAS, With no concern for his own safety, Inspector Cuevas ran into the apartment, shouting "the apartment is on fire" and saw a woman on the phone. After she completed her call to 9-1-1, he quickly escorted her and the little boy out of the apartment. While the two occupants exited the building, Inspector Cuevas then rushed up to the third floor and pounded on the apartment door. A young man answered the door; and
WHEREAS, Inspector Cuevas informed the occupant that the building was on fire and that he and his family needed to leave immediately; and
WHEREAS, Inspector Cuevas then ran down the stairs to the first floor and knocked loudly on the apartment door, shouting that the building was on fire; and
WHEREAS, Shortly thereafter, Chicago Fire Department trucks arrived and Inspector Cuevas informed firefighters that he had cleared everyone out of the second and third-floor apartments and that there was no response on the first floor; and
WHEREAS, As a result of the bravery and quick thinking of Inspector Ismael Cuevas, people's lives were saved. Going well above and beyond the call of duty, Inspector Cuevas proved himself to be a great credit to the City of Chicago workforce; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and Members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled this twentieth day of September, 2018, do hereby honor Department of Buildings Inspector Ismael Cuevas for his display of bravery and dedication in the face of serious injury or worse; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Ismael Cuevas, and placed on permanent record in his personnel file, as a token of our gratitude and esteem.
