RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, the year 2018 marks fifty years since the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea opened in Chicago; and

 

WHEREAS, to celebrate this significant occasion, the Consulate General hosted a reception on October 2, 2018 at the Union League Club; and

 

WHEREAS, since the opening in 1968, the ties between the Republic of Korea and the United States Midwest including City of Chicago have expanded and transformed; and

 

WHEREAS, the Consulate General has played a pivotal role to broaden and deepen the relationship between the Republic of Korea and the City of Chicago, including Illinois; and

 

WHEREAS, in commemoration of the 50lh anniversary, the Consulate General has hosted various cultural events such as the Rhythm of Korea at the Harris Theater, Taekwondo Competition for Consul General Cup, and presented Korean films at the Asian Pop-up Cinema throughout this year; and

 

WHEREAS, on November 2, 2018, at the Chicago Cultural Center, the Consulate General will host a fashion show presenting Hanbok which are Korean cultural and traditional costumes; and

 

WHEREAS, in the Republic of Korea, the City of Chicago is well known as a green city with over six-hundred parks, a melting pot of arts and culture, an international hub for finance, commerce, industry, technology and transportation, and the home of the former president Barack Obama; and

 

WHEREAS, for the past eleven (11) years, the City of Chicago has been a sister city to Busan, the second largest city in the Republic of Korea; and

 

WHEREAS, in addition, there has been a remarkable growth between Republic of Korea and the City of Chicago; and

 

WHEREAS, currently, there are twelve (12) direct flights per week connecting Seoul, the capital city ofthe Republic of Korea, and Chicago promoting people to people exchanges and business opportunities; and

 

WHEREAS, every year, thousands of Korean students prepare their future in universities across the Chicagoland; and

 

WHEREAS, approximately one-hundred-twenty thousand of Korean Americans live and work in the Chicago metropolitan area that create a bridge between Republic of Korea and the City of Chicago for a closer cooperation and better understanding; now, therefore

 

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHICAGO:

 

That we extent our gratitude and congratulate the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in

Chicago for their 50th Anniversary
