RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, Sidney Shapiro has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 86; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, A resident of Highland Park, Sidney Shapiro was a prominent Chicago clothier and the loving husband for 65 years of Muriel "Cissie," nee Smason; and

WHEREAS, Sidney Shapiro was the much-adored father of Lee, Scott and Jeff and the grandfather of seven to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and

WHEREAS, The son of an Eastern European immigrant tailor, Sidney Shapiro was raised on the West Side and attended Brant Elementary School and Marshall High School; and

WHEREAS, Known as the "Haberdasher to the Stars," Sidney Shapiro founded the Syd Jerome Menswear clothing store in the Loop more than 60 years ago; and

WHEREAS, The store opened with Jerry Frishman, a partner he later bought out, at 46 South Clark and relocated a few times before moving to its current location at 2 North LaSalle Street; and

WHEREAS, Sidney Shapiro outfitted both Mayors Daley, singer Stevie Wonder, jazz piano great Ramsey Lewis and numerous Chicago Blackhawk team members; and

WHEREAS, Throughout the decades Sidney Shapiro exhibited a marvelous talent for selecting clothing for his clients and tailoring it to fit them to perfection; and

WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Sidney Shapiro to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and

WHEREAS, Sidney Shapiro was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Sidney Shapiro imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
