RESOLUTION

 

WHEREAS, the City of Chicago is a world-class city integral to the industries of aviation, hospitality, service and lodging; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Boeing Company, according to its website, "is the world's largest aerospace company and leading manufacturer of commercial jetliners, defense, space and security systems, and service provider of aftermarket support. As America's biggest manufacturing exporter, the company supports airlines and U.S. and allied government customers in more than 150 countries;" and,

 

 

WHEREAS, the Boeing Company was proud to introduce to the aviation industry its newest product, the Boeing 737 MAX in May, 2017; and,

 

WHEREAS, in the last six months the Boeing 737 MAX has been involved in two tragic crashes involving Lion Air Flight JT 610 killing 189 passengers and crew on October 29, 2018 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 on March 10, 2019 killing 149 passengers and crew; and,

 

WHEREAS, the governments of China and Indonesia have grounded all Boeing 737 MAX aircraft in an abundance of caution in order to protect the safety ofthe flying public; and,

 

WHEREAS, the United State Federal Aviation Administration has taken no substantive steps to investigate this matter or ground these aircraft from continued use; now therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Members of the Chicago City Council, gathered here this 13th Day of March, do hereby call upon the Federal Aviation Administration to take seriously the recent events surrounding the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft and ground all planes from future use pending a thorough investigation; and,

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we call upon all aircraft carriers to, in the absence of federal leadership, voluntarily pull the Boeing 737 MAX from circulation until any potential design flaws or defects have been resolved by the Boeing Company; and,

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that representatives of the Boeing Company appear before the Committee on Aviation to discuss what impact, if any, design & efficiency changes to engine placement, wing design, tail cone and nose landing gear coupled with the MCAS [Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System) had on recent events, and to reassure Chicago about the safety and integrity of their product.
