MEMORIAL RESOLUTION FOR SHIRLEY MARX

WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that members of this Chamber learned of the death of Shirley Marx on March 25, 2019 in Las Vegas, Nevada at the age of 88; and

WHEREAS, The City Council has been informed of her passing by the Honorable Margaret Laurino, Alderman ofthe 391" Ward; and

WHEREAS, Shirley was born on October 21, 1930. She was a long time resident of Wilmette, Illinois and more recently Chicago, Illinois; and

WHEREAS, Shirley met and married the love of her life, Edward M. Marx, in 1952 and from this union were blessed with seven amazing children; and

WHEREAS, Edward purchased Economy Moving and Transfer, a firm established by his father Michael in 1919, which later became New World Van Lines. For the next 43 years, Shirley and Edward worked side by side building the company until Edward passed away in 1995; and

WHEREAS, Following the loss of her beloved husband, Shirley Marx, supported by her family, assumed responsibility of the company's leadership and successfully served as co-founder and chairman of the New World Van Lines board and humbly embraced organizations that promoted women in leadership; and

WHEREAS, Through hard work and passion, New World Van Lines has just celebrated 100 years in business and has become one of the top fifteen moving companies in the country; and

WHEREAS, in 1999, as further demonstration of commitment to be responsive to the needs of corporations and customers eager to support a diverse supply chain, New World Van Lines earned the designation as a Women's Business Enterprise by the Women's Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC), the nation's largest third-party certifier of businesses owned and operated by women; and

WHEREAS, in 2011, Shirley Marx received the Illinois Movers' and Warehousemen's Association Quality Service Award as a testament to her fine work serving those in need of moving services; and

WHEREAS, in September of 2015, Shirley Marx, was presented the Hedy M. Ratner and S. Carol Dougal Legacy Award at the Women's Business Development Center's (WBDC) 29th Annual Entrepreneurial Woman's Conference. The Legacy award is given to women entrepreneurs who embody the visionary and entrepreneurial spirit of the WBDC's Co-Founders Hedy M. Ratner and S. Carol Dougal; and

WHEREAS, Under Shirley's guidance New World Van Lines demonstrates its dedicated corporate citizenship and charitable service in so many valuable ways, guided by its mission statement, Actively Caring Together (ACT); "To build upon the New World giving tradition, engaging all New World employees to address four areas of need, our giving pillars. These are: Food and Clothing, Health and Wellness, Education, and Support for our Armed Forces; and, to take action collectively and individually to make a positive impact on the world around us by giving our time, talents, and treasures"; and

WHEREAS, Along with her successful career, Shirley was a devoted wife and a nurturing mother. She was a great friend and a very generous person. She had a one of a kind personality: she was tenacious, hardworking and believed in the adage "take no prisoners." One would be considered truly fortunate to have known her and to be her friend; and

 

 

WHEREAS, Shirley leaves to cherish her memories; her loving children, Dinah (the late Edward) Stecki, Edward Jr. (Frances) Marx, Michael (Marie Luise), David (Patricia), Janet Marx, Jerome (Lynne) Marx, and Quintin (Olga) Marx. She had 22 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, Shirley touched the lives of all who knew her through her warm and loving ways and her vivacious spirit. She will be deeply missed, but the memory of her character, intelligence, faith, and compassion will live on in those who knew and loved her, now therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, that we the Mayor and members of the City Council of Chicago, gathered here this tenth day of April, 2019, do hereby express our deep sorrow on the death of Shirley Marx and express our deepest sympathies to her family and friends; and
