, Green City Market will celebrate its 20m Anniversary this year; and

 

WHEREAS, This body has been informed of this momentous occasion by Michele Smith, Alderman of the 43rd Ward; and

 

WHEREAS, Green City Market was opened in 1998 in the crosswalk next to the Chicago Theatre by founder Abby Mandel, who was inspired by the sustainable farmer's markets in Europe; and

 

WHEREAS, Green City Market quickly outgrew that space and was moved to the southern end of Lincoln Park where it currently operates from May to October bringing in crowds of more than 175,000 visitors a year; and

 

WHEREAS, Green City Market has made it their mission to support local artisan farmers and producers, educate people about food quality and its sources, promote sustainable food practices, support local farm communities, connect local producers and farmers to chefs, restaurateurs, food organizations, and the' public while also providing fresh, high-quality, and locally produced food to Chicagoans; and

 

WHEREAS. In 2008, after seeing the response to local farmers and sustainable agricultural practices. Green City Market became Chicago's first year-round, remaining open from November to April, first at Lincoln Park Zoo and now in The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum; and

 

WHEREAS, In addition to providing fresh food. Green City Market also provides educational outreach opportunities and programs such as Local Compost Drop Off & Recycling, Illinois Link Card and SNAP Benefits, Edible Education & Healthy Food for Kids, Edible Gardens & Community Education, Club Sprouts, Field Trips, Celebrity Chef Demonstrations & Cooking Lessons, and the Farmer Scholarship Program; and

 

WHEREAS, This year. Green City Market will proudly celebrate 20 years of providing Chicago residents with fresh and sustainable food, thoughtful programing, and access to local farmers; now, therefore

 

 

BE H RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and Members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled this twenty-second day of May, 2019, do hereby proclaim May 4, 2019 to be GREEN CITY MARKET DAY IN CHICAGO in recognition of their tireless work in connecting local producers and farmers to chefs, restaurateurs, food organizations and the public; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Green City Market as a sign of our recognition of its 20th Anniversary.
