RESOLUTION

 

WHEREAS, DignityUSA was founded in February, 1969, in Los Angeles, California, for those who wanted to embrace both their sexual orientation/gender identity and their Catholic faith to have a place to do so;

 

WHEREAS, from there, DignityUSA spread across the country, including to Chicago in 1972, and has operated continuously ever since;

 

WHEREAS, the Chicago Chapter is proud to have hosted three of DignityUSA's biennial conventions/conferences during the last five decades;

 

WHEREAS, DignityUSA is the oldest organization of LGBTQI+ Catholics and allies in the world;

 

WHEREAS, DignityUSA is one of only two pre-Stonewall organizations that is still vital and having an impact working for LGBTQI+ justice;

 

WHEREAS, DignityUSA's mission is to achieve justice, equality and full inclusion of LGBTQI+ people in the Catholic Church and in society;

 

WHEREAS, throughout its 50-year history, DignityUSA and its Chapters and Caucuses have helped tens of thousands of people live their faith and identities with pride and integrity;

 

WHEREAS, DignityUSA speaks for the majority of American Catholics who support civil rights and religious inclusion for LGBTQI+ people in the face of opposition from many Catholic Church officials;

 

WHEREAS, DignityUSA and its members are committed to Gospel-based service to those at the margins of society, and have donated their time, talent and money to improving the lives of others across the country;

WHEREAS, DignityUSA and Dignity Chicago are excited to host members ofthe Global Network of Rainbow Catholics, with members from six continents represented at the GNRC Assembly, in their first gathering in the US;

 

AND WHEREAS, numerous individuals from Chicago and the surrounding area have provided exceptional leadership, service, direction, financial support, and wisdom that furthered DignityUSA's mission throughout these 50 years;

 

BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered here this 29th day of May 2019, do hereby commend and honor DignityUSA for their advocacy for the Catholic LGBTQI+ community. We congratulate them on their 50 years of service.
