Resolution in Solidarity' with the Puerto Rican People

Whereas, The City of Chicago is home to more than 100.000 Puerto Ricans who contribute to our cultural, social and economic life; and

Whereas, On July 11th transcripts from 889 pages of an encrypted chat between the Governor of Puerto Rico, Ricardo Rossello, and his closest allies unveiled jokes of a homophobic, fatphobic and mysogynist nature, and about the victims of hurricane Maria, as well as attacks using threatening language against other elected officials and journalists; and

Whereas, For the last 13 days the people of Puerto Rico have bravely taken to the streets demanding the resignation of Governor Rossello, with as many as one million people participating in a national strike that took" place on Monday July 22nd to put forward said demand; and

Whereas, The people of Puerto Rico, both on Puerto Rican soil and in the diaspora, have spoken clearly and expressed their distrust for their current Governor and the need for him to resign; and

Whereas, The call for Governor Rossello's resignation has been adopted by a wide range of organizations, institutions, elected officials, and community leaders; and

Whereas, We believe that Puerto Ricans have a right to a government they can trust, that respects it's people and listens to their concerns;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That we, The Mayor and members of the City Council of Chicago, gathered here this 24th day of July, do hereby declare that we stand in solidarity with the Puerto Rican people and demand the resignation of Governor Pedro Rosello, immediately.
