RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING PATRICK M. MAGOON ON HIS RETIREMENT

 

 

WHEREAS, Patrick M. Magoon, President and CEO of Lurie Children's Hospital, has devoted his entire professional career to Lurie Children's and the former Children's Memorial Hospital of Chicago, starting as an intern in 1977 and working in several different operational and leadership positions, until he was named CEO in 1997; and

WHEREAS, Upon his appointment as CEO, Pat was the primary architect of a turnaround plan which has taken the medical center from annual operating losses to operating margins that allow for reinvestment in the mission; and

WHEREAS, In 2005, Pat led a seven-year plan to build a new state-of-the-art, 288-bed facility on the downtown campus of its academic partner, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, increasing clinical, academic, and research opportunities that are leading to better outcomes for children; and

WHEREAS, Since moving from Lincoln Park to Streeterville to the new hospital, the number of children Lurie Children's has served has increased by 50 percent, outpatient visits have grown by over 70 percent, research funding from the National Institutes of Health has quadrupled, and community benefit investment exceeds $100 million annually; and

WHEREAS, Under Pat's guidance, Lurie Children's has become one of the nation's best children's hospitals, recognized as a "Top Performer on Key Quality Measures" by the Joint Commission, ranked as a top children's hospital in the nation and consistently listed on the U.S. News & World Report Best Children's Hospitals Honor Roll; and

WHEREAS, Pat has played a major leadership role in both federal and State arenas on children's health policy, such as the Advancing Care for Exceptional Kids Act, which will allow Medicaid reform for medically complex children, the Children's Hospitals Graduate Medical Education Program for training the pediatricians and specialists of the future, pediatric research and child safety; and

WHEREAS, Pat has been the driving force behind Lurie Children's programs and initiatives in under-resourced Chicago communities designed to improve the health of all children, regardless of whether they ever come through the doors of the hospital; and

WHEREAS, After over 40 years of dedicated service and 22 years as President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Pat is retiring from his role as President and CEO of Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, effective December 5, 2019; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor, Alderman Brian Hopkins, Alderman Brendan Reilly, and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered here this twenty-sixth day of November, 2019, do hereby thank and congratulate Patrick M. Magoon for his lifelong service and leadership to enhance children's health and create a brighter future for all children.
