WHEREAS, John J. Jemilo has been called to eternal life by the wisdcftnk>f Sbdat the age of 89; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

 

WHEREAS, John J. Jemilo was the loving husband of Candace; and

 

WHEREAS, John J. Jemilo was the much-adored father of Claudia, John, Leahruth, Stephanie, and the late Kurt, the grandfather of four, and the great-grandfather of three to whom he imparted many ofthe fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and

 

WHEREAS, John J. Jemilo enjoyed a long and highly successful career as an attorney, teacher, and Chicago Police officer; and

 

WHEREAS, John J. Jemilo was born and raised in Chicago where he attended St. Rita High School, Chicago Teachers College, Illinois Institute of Technology, and John Marshall Law School; and

 

WHEREAS, Prior to his career as a police officer, John J. Jemilo enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he served as a Sergeant during the Korean War; and

 

WHEREAS, Upon discharge from the Marines, John J. Jemilo joined the Chicago Police Department where he rose through the ranks as District Commander, Director of Training, Chief of Patrol, and First Deputy Superintendent; and

 

WHEREAS, As the First Deputy Superintendent ofthe Chicago Police Department, John J. Jemilo is remembered for his commitment to improving law enforcement, fighting for racial justice, and advocating for diverse hiring practices of officers; and

 

WHEREAS, John J. Jemilo also served as Executive Director of the Chicago Crime Commission and taught as an adjunct law professor at Loyola University and DePaul University; and

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of John J. Jemilo serve as an example to all; and

 

WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared John J. Jemilo to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and

 

WHEREAS, John J. Jemilo was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

 

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, John J. Jemilo imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members ofthe Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-sixth day of November, 2019, do hereby commemorate John J. Jemilo for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy ofthis resolution be presented to the family of John J. Jemilo.
