HONORARY STREET SIGN FOF SPC HENRY MAYFIELD JR WAY

ORDINANCE

WHEREAS, on October 14th, 1996 Henry Jarret Mayfield Jr was born in the Englewood neighborhood, to the union of Crystal Davis and Henry Mayfield Sr., who later married Carmoneta Horton-Mayfield, the oldest of seven siblings; and

WHEREAS, Henry, affectionately known as "Boo-Boo" to his family accepted Christ as his Savior at an early age and baptized under the leadership of Rev. Marion Johnson Sr., of Come Alive Ministry of Faith Church. Outside of his spirituality he loved spending quality time with his siblings and cousins we he served as big brother to them all; and

WHEREAS, an Englewood native who knew the importance of education at an early age. He attended Charles R. Henderson Elementary, Lionel Hampton Elementary, William J. Bogan High School, and later graduating from Hillcrest High School in 2014. After high school graduation, he continued his quest of knowledge at Northern Illinois University where he majored in Business Management; and

WHEREAS, in 2016, he began working as an Aircraft Fueler at Aircraft Service International Group (ASIG), where he built long lasting friendships with staff, airline customers and pilots; and

WHEREAS, motivated from previous work experiences and motivation, in August 2017 he showed true patriotism for his country by enlisting into the United States Army. After completing his initial training Specialist (SPC) Henry Mayfield Jr became a 94C (pronounced ninety-four Charlie) Utilities Equipment Repairer assigned to 1 Battalion (BN)-58th Aviation Regiment, 164th Theater Airfield Operations Group, out of Fort Rucker, AL.; and

WHEREAS, in October 2019 SPC Mayfield deployed to Manda Bay Airfield about 150 miles south ofthe Kenya-Somalia border in October 2020 where his battalion provided expeditionary air traffic control and air management support; and

WHEREAS, he tragically lost his life during an attack that included mortars and small arms fire attack, resulting in a breach in the base's perimeter, damaging six civilian aircrafts and a loss of additional civilian casualties on January 5th, 2020.

 

WHEREAS, SPC Mayfield awards in decorations include the Combat Action Badge (Posthumous), Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Overseas Ribbon, and Army Service Ribbon; and

 

BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHICAGO:

 

 

Section 1. Pursuant to Section 2-8-040 of the Municipal Code of Chicago, which allows erection of honorary street name designations, the Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Transportation shall take the necessary action for standardization of, between the 5500th block of south Laflin, to 5700 S Laflin St as Honorary SPC Henry Mayfield Jr. Way."

 

Section 2. This ordinance shall take effect upon its passage and publication.
