RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, The City Council ofthe City of Chicago acknowledges and recognizes the amazing contributions to the cultural fabric of Chicago by Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Transgender people, Questioning people, Intersexuals, Asexuals, all other self-defined members, and Drag performers; and,

 

WHEREAS, Transgender people have faced many difficult, and often times, dangerous challenges to their existence simply for being whom they are; and,

 

WHEREAS, Transgender minorities, particularly Black Trans men & women, have faced these stereotypes of gender & sexual conformity while simultaneously fighting racism, bigotry and fear from outside their ethnic or racial demographic as well as within; and,

 

WHEREAS, Transgender people face many obstacles related to healthcare, employment discrimination, housing discrimination, education discrimination, higher rates of physical violence against them, higher suicide rates, higher murder rates, higher rates of sex work and prostitution, and higher rates of poverty; and,

 

WHEREAS, Recent decisions and policy interpretations by President Donald J. Trump and his administration further endanger the lives of the Transgender community; now therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That the City of Chicago City Council Committee on Health and Human Services conduct public hearings on the status of the Transgender residents of Chicago, with witnesses and testimony from those that can speak to the issues of health, employment, education, housing, discrimination, violence, and suicide rates within this demographic; and,

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the full depth and breadth ofthe Transgender community know that we stand in solidarity in addressing these issues locally in an effort to be a beacon of equality for other municipalities to follow.
