CONGRATULATIONS EXTENDED TO MANUELA "MANUELITA" DE LA CRUZ GARCIA ON CELEBRATING HER 95TH BIRTHDAY
WHEREAS, Manuela "Manuelita" De La Cruz Garcia will celebrate the joyous occasion of her 95th birthday on August 8, 2020; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this milestone by the Honorable Michael Rodriguez, Alderman ofthe 22nd Ward; and
WHEREAS, Manuelita was born August 8, 1925 in Roma, Texas as an only child, before moving to Chicago in 1953, where she has called Little Village her home for over 50 years; and
WHEREAS, Always an entrepreneur, Manuelita began working at the age of eight, helping her mother wash clothes for others.
WHEREAS, Manuelita and her compadre started Alegria en Chicago, a radio show in 1968 that played musica Latina, at WXRT; and
WHEREAS, Manuelita continued her entrepreneurial spirit throughout the years, including working as a door-to-door saleswoman, selling clothes and jewelry, before ultimately retiring from General Motor; and
WHEREAS, In retirement, Manuelita used her time and resources to help raise her granddaughter; and
WHEREAS, Manuelita continued to be a strong voice for her community, participating in her Local School Council, and serving as the President of her block club for over 30 years; and
WHEREAS, In 2001, Manuelita participated in the 19-day hunger strike for what is now the Little Village Lawndale High School; and
WHEREAS, Manuelita is a role model for her family, friends and community, always finding a way to help those in need and is never shy to hold public officials accountable; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members ofthe City Council ofthe City of Chicago, gathered here this twenty-second day of July, 2020, do hereby congratulate Manuela "Manuelita" De La Cruz Garcia on her 95th Birthday, and wish her continued health, success and happiness; and
