Re: Traffic Study Request - S. Lawndale Avenue and W. 65th Place Dear Alderman Tabares:
The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) has received your traffic study request to review the intersection of Lawndale Avenue and 65th Place. CDOT understands that your office is concerned with speeding and pedestrian safety on Lawndale at its intersection with 65th Place.

Lawndale Avenue is a 30-foot-wide local road with on-street parking permitted on both sides of the street. 65th Place is a 28-foot-wide local one-way westbound road. On-street parking is permitted on both sides of the street. 65th Place is stop controlled at Lawndale, while Lawndale is uncontrolled.

In review of three-year crash data from 2017 to 2019, CDOT noted that there was 1 crash at the intersection of Lawndale and 65th Place, which did not involve pedestrians. The crash* was an angle crash between a vehicle traveling on 65th Place and a vehicle traveling on Lawndale.
Stop Signs
When determining if a stop sign is warranted, CDOT follows federal guidelines established in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). The MUTCD advises that multi-way stop control should be used when traffic volumes on intersecting streets are approximately equal. In this instance, the volume on Lawndale is approximately equal to the volume on 65th Place. Additionally, similar intersections between local roads in the vicinity of Lawndale and 65th Place are all-way stop controlled; therefore, CDOT does not oppose an all-way stop at this intersection.
