RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, part-time (adjunct) faculty teach approximately 65% of the classes at City Colleges;

WHEREAS, part-time faculty teach the same courses and are required to have the same degrees as tenured full-time professors;

WHEREAS, part-time faculty at CCC earn an average of $13,604 per year - well under the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) of $26,200 for a family of 4;

WHEREAS, part-time faculty at CCC may teach up to 80% of a full-time load, and are paid $.51 on the dollar earned by a full-time professor;

WHEREAS, part-time faculty, part-time adult educators, and full-time faculty all participate in classroom instruction, however only part-time adult educators and full-time faculty are paid a living wage;

WHEREAS, part-time faculty are required one office hour per course, thus forcing faculty to work numerous unpaid hours above and beyond their contractual obligation in order to ensure student success;

WHEREAS, Chicago taxpayers are forced to pick up the financial cost for the estimated 1/4 of part-time faculty who receive governmental assistance;

WHEREAS, adjunct salaries at City Colleges are not at all competitive with other comparable community colleges in and around the Chicago area; and

WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees of City Colleges is subject to appointment and jurisdiction of the Mayor of Chicago; now, therefore

Susan Sadlowski Garza, Alderwoman, 10th Ward Chairwoman, Committee on Workforce Development

BE IT RESOLVED THAT, the City Colleges of Chicago negotiate in good faith to reach a new collective bargaining agreement with the City Colleges' part-time adjunct union, CCCLOC; to provide an equitable and living wage for its part-time adjunct faculty; and, City Colleges of Chicago will end its inequitable practice of paying employees who do the same work at disparate rates.
