RESOLUTION CALLING FOR HEARINGS TO EVALUATE THE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF
VACANT AND ABANDONED PROPERTIES
WHEREAS, there are thousands of vacant and abandoned properties throughout the City of Chicago (the "City"); and,
WHEREAS, such properties contribute to the destabilization of communities, property values, and the economy in the City; and,
WHEREAS, the Covid-19 Pandemic has only heightened the City's challenges to economic growth; and,
WHEREAS, homeownership and property acquisition are significant to reinvestment in communities, wealth creation, and stability for the City; and,
WHEREAS, the City and the Cook County Government have a significant shared interest in the thousands of vacant and abandoned properties, but lack collaborative action, exchange of information, or collective examination of such shared interest; and,
WHEREAS, on January 28, 2021, the Cook County Government filed a Resolution proposing a public hearing with their Business and Economic Development Committee to evaluate the economic impact of the vacant and abandoned properties; and,
BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Members of the City Council call to hold open hearings and discussions with both the Economic, Capital, and Technology Development Committee and the Cook County Government's Business and Economic Committee to evaluate the economic impact of the shared vacant and abandoned properties throughout the City of Chicago.
