Title: Congratulations to Epiphany United Church of Christ Celebrating its 125th Anniversary
RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, In November 1894 the Rev William Grotefeld ofthe German Evangelical Mission on the Northwest side ofChicago began holding services and Sunday school classes in a store room at 3340 North Leavitt for German immigrants in the neighborhoods now known as Ravenswood, Roscoe Village and North Center; and,
WHEREAS, In 1895 the new congregation built a wooden church on the corner of Roscoe Street and Claremont Avenue and then added a two story Sunday school and parsonage; and,
WHEREAS, In 1908, having outgrown their first building, Epiphany church bought a new parcel of land at the corner of Bradley Place and Robey Street (now Damen Avenue), constructed the foundation and basement ofa new church in 1909, and constructed a new parsonage on Bradley Place in 1910; and,
WHEREAS, Delays caused by World War One, the sudden death of its Pastor, and the Great Depression notwithstanding, the congregation finally completed the fine brick structure at 2008 W Bradley Place where Epiphany still works and worships with a modern diverse congregation that nevertheless still includes a handful of German speakers today; and,
WHEREAS, Epiphany United Church of Christ is now, after a pandemic delay, marking its 125th year culminating in a celebratory gathering on November 6, 2021; and now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, Thatwe, the Mayor and members ofthe City Council ofthe City of Chicago hereby express our congratulations and best wishes to the congregants of Epiphany United Church of Christ on their 125th anniversary; and,
