BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHICAGO:

 

 

SECTION 1. Pursuant to an ordinance heretofore passed by the City Council which allows erection of honorary street-name signs, the Commissioner of Transportation shall take the necessary action for standardization of South Peoria Street from 95th to 96th (9500 to 9600 South Peoria Street) as "Lt. Dwain P. Williams Way."

T)Mam/& "Beginning

Dwaln P. Williams was born in Chicago, Illinois to the union of James and Vivian L. Williams, both of whom preceded him In death. He was the third of five children and was affectionately known to many as TC. Dwaln acknowledge Christ at the precious age of d-years-old while attending Harris Temple AOH Church of God In Christ; this led to a profound spiritual awakening and contributed to his close walk with the Lord. While attending Mount Vernon Church, Dwain developed a passion for two loves that followed him into his adulthood - Basketball & Muslcl He excelled at playing basketball for both school

and church leading to many awards and notoriety for being the "Dunk Banger". His love of music, singing and learning to play various Instruments such as the keyboard, guitar, and saxophone led him to creating his first music group. Pwaln also loved to act and participated In many plays and skits written and produced predominately by his mother, Vivian.

Dwaln attended Altgeld Elementary School and then Harper High School where he matriculated to the

United States Army In 1976. He served In numerous duty stations around the world as a Wire Systems Installer/Operator with his last duty station being the 501st Signal Battalion ofthe 101st

Airborne Assault Division. Following active duty, Dwaln spent two years In the Army Reserves continuing to serve his country while attending college. He was meritoriously decorated and was a stellar soldier receiving many national and international commendations and platoon achievements. His decorations Include expert badge M16 rifle/sharpshooter and hand grenade expert. Dwaln loved serving In the military and remained an active member ofthe American Legion- George Giles Post #87.

Dwain was a passionate and supportive husband and father. As a dad to four girls, he set an extraordinary standard for love, education, civic responsibility, work ethic, unity, peace, and commitment to the betterment of humanity. He Instilled In his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren the Importance of self-worth, self-expression, confidence, and hard work. His teachings and approach to life was "come big or don't come at all". This bold Idea for living was commonplace in the Williams household and contributed to many ofthe family's accomplishments small and large. Building on his military legacy of service and community. Dwaln mentored many at risk youth and understood that protecting the community essential^ meant protecting his own family. For over 10 years, Dwain'e mission was to save as many youth as he could reach. His work with the Chicago Park District as a physical instructor allowed him to help mold the youngest Chicagoans in an attempt to keep them off the streets and out of early graves.

 

 

His tenure at St. Philip Nerl School as a computer and physical education teacher further Increased his ability to make an Impact on young minds as a black male educator. Dwaln exemplified what it means to be a herol He utilized his talent and every synaptic transmission to ascertain the knowledge needed to complete his life's work. Dwain acquired four degrees, over 8>0 certifications In numerous mathematical, scientific, and Independent studies. He earned countless awards, and accolades too many to list. His life accomplishments were selected to be detailed In the prestigious book of "Who's

Who of Outstanding Young Americans".

 

T>umiiv'6/ Career

In December of 1992, Dwaln began a 26 year career with the Chicago Fire Department. He was assigned to Engine 122 as an Emergency Medical Technician and CAD - Computer Instructor. From 2000 - 2005, Dwain was assigned to Command Van-274, Hazardous Incident Team/5-1-1, and served •as a Chicago Fire Academy Instructor (Response to Terrorism Basic Concepts). Dwaln was promoted to Fire Engineer In 2005 and then to lieutenant In 2011. Prior to retiring In 2015, Dwaln was assigned to the Office of Emergency Management and Communications as a Fire Tactical Desk/Watch Officer.

Dwaln risked his life Innumerable times to save the lives of others. His emergency management acumen was pivotal In the success ofthe city's advancement In intelligence and tactical response.

Dwaln was a man of many talents. He developed a deep passion for music when his grandfather gave

him an acoustic guitar. He played with many bands Including RAM Band and Mixed Nutz and was known to all as "D-Sharp". He was also a lover of all things science, technology, engineering and math. He could calculate the number of atoms in the human body, map the sky like Copernicus, teach others how to handle hazardous materials, and test computerized switchboards that Interfaced multi-channel (VHF) systems. Dwaln was an avid chessman because, after all, life is a big game of chess.

Dwaln lived a life well spent with the family he loved and cherished. He leaves an extraordinary legacy of love, commitment and dedication to his wife, Karen; his four children, Tarmarcea (Chail III) Humphrey,

Kenya (Carlos) Hester, Dlona Williams, and Dakeeda (Qulntin) Williams-Barton; sister Anunka (Stanley) Rowell, brother Keith (Jacquelyn) Williams; a brother and sister who preceded him in death

Grayling Williams and Galletta Lucky; a special sister-in-law Linda Petite: God-son Eric; Nine grandchildren Chail IV, Challzon Sr., MI'chelle, Michael Jr., Chatari, Chabreel, Charity, Jordan, and Hon; Five great grandchildren Challzon Jr., Kalzon, Anthony, Royal and Nazara Jr.; and a host of nieces,

nephews, cousins, in-laws, friends, and colleagues.
