I transmit herewith a resolution to affirm the City's support for the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, American-Ukrainian relations have long served as a foundation for security, freedom, and human rights in Eastern Europe; and

WHEREAS, Chicago is home to over 35,000 residents of Ukrainian ancestry; and

WHEREAS, Chicago's Ukrainian Village neighborhood is a national hub of Ukrainian community, culture, and art; and

WHEREAS, Kyiv stands as the capital of Ukraine and a sister city to the City of Chicago; and

WHEREAS, Chicago and Kyiv have engaged in formalized cultural, artistic, and athletic exchanges for over 30 years as part of Chicago Sister Cities International program; and
WHEREAS, Democracy and self-determination are cornerstone values of both the United States and Ukraine; and
WHEREAS, Ukraine and the Ukrainian people represent a distinct culture with a long, proud history; and

WHEREAS, Self-determination is the right of all people around the world, including the Ukrainian people; and

WHEREAS, A free and independent Ukraine is of vital importance to protecting the Ukrainian people, their history, art, and culture; and

WHEREAS, The Members of this Chamber have great appreciation for Ukrainian people and their culture as an integral part of Chicago; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and Members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, affirm our support for the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
