RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Former President Donald Trump invoked a policy known as Title 42 to refuse migrants seeking asylum at the border if the U.S. deems them a risk to public health under the pretense that the COVID-19 pandemic was too dangerous to allow for immigration while simultaneously and repeatedly lying to the public about scientifically-backed COVID mitigations like the effectiveness of wearing a mask; and,

WHEREAS, Public health officials have routinely condemned this use of Title 42 as politically motivated and not necessary for the protection of public health; and,

WHEREAS, President Joe Biden has not only kept the Title 42 policy in place, but has used it to expel more than 1 million migrants who have arrived at the southern border in the last year, forcing them back to dangerous situations, either in their home countries or in over-crowded, increasingly volatile border towns in Mexico; and,

WHEREAS, The United States of America is a "Nation of Immigrants" and Title 42 is being improperly invoked to deny asylum seekers their legally protected human right to seek asylum in America; now therefore

BE IT RESOLVED IN THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHICAGO;

That we, the undersigned members ofthe City of Chicago City Council hereby call on the Biden administration to revoke Title 42 and reinstate non-emergency border policies that allow migrants and asylum seekers to exercise their rights to apply for entry to the United States.
