RESOLUTION CALLING FOR A HEARING ON THE CHICAGO POLICE DEPARTMENT'S LEAVE OF ABSENCE POLICIES AND

PRACTICES

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago Police Department had a practice that traditionally allowed officers to take a leave of absence for potentially up to one year without requiring such officers to attend the entirety of the Chicago Police Academy before returning to work for the department; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago Police Department has in some recent cases not allowed officers to take a leave of absence and instead made them resign requiring officers to re-attend the Chicago Police Academy should they desire to return; and

 

WHEREAS, This practice has impacted moral of officers and could further hinder the City's efforts to recruit and maintain an effective police force; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered here this twenty-second day of June, 2022, do hereby call upon the Committee on Public Safety to hold a hearing to discuss the Chicago Police Department's policy and practices regarding leaves of absence; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That we request the Superintendant of the Chicago Police Department, or his designee, to testify at the hearing.
