ORDINANCE

BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHICAGO:

SECTION 1. Chapter 2-84 of the Municipal Code of the City of Chicago is hereby amended by inserting a new Section 2-84-085, as follows:

2-84-085 Hours and Days of Rest.

The Chicago Police Department shall allow each sworn member at least twenty-four consecutive hours of rest, in addition to the regular period of rest allowed at the end of such officer's assigned shift: (i) for every consecutive 60-hour period the member works; and (ii) if the member does not receive at least twenty-four consecutive hours of rest otherwise, at least every calendar week. This Section does not prohibit a sworn officer from voluntarily agreeing to work on such day of rest required by this Section if the worker is compensated at the applicable overtime rate for all hours worked on such day of rest. The provisions of this section shall not apply during a declared disaster, subject to City Council approval for any such disaster that exceeds seven days, in accordance with the powers granted to the Mayor under the Illinois Emergency Management Agency Act (20 ILCS 3305/11).

SECTION 2. This ordinance shall take effect upon passage and publication.
