Committee on Finance Chicago City Council Meeting September 21, 2022

ORDER

WHEREAS, groundbreaking for the Holabird and Roche designed Municipal Grant Park Stadium on Chicago's picturesque lakefront occurred 100 years ago, on August 11,1922; and,

WHEREAS, the new stadium was renamed "Soldier Field" on November 11, 1925 in honor of the US soldiers who died in combat during World War One; and,

WHEREAS, the formal dedication of the stadium as "Soldier Field" came during a historic Army - Navy football game on November 27,1926; and,

WHEREAS, the original classical Greek Revival structure, bracketed by its majestic Doric Colonnade, was designated a National Historical Landmark by the National Park Service in 1987, only to suffer the indignity of being delisted in 2006 as a result of a redesign which substantially altered the classical elements of the structure; and,

WHEREAS, the iconic Soldier Field faces yet another indignity from plans to reimagine the Museum Campus, selling corporate naming rights to Soldier Field, thus dishonoring the sacred war memorial dedicated by the citizens of Chicago in the memory of American soldiers who fought and died to preserve our democracy; now, therefore,

BE IT ORDERED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHICAGO, That we, the Members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, stand firmly with our city's tradition of paying sacred tribute to the brave men and women that served the Armed Forces of the United State of America, reaffirming our commitment to the sanctity of the memorial campus and its associated buildings and monuments; and,

BE IT FURTHER ORDERED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHICAGO, that no Tax Increment Financing (TIF] requests submitted on behalf of the Chicago Park District before the City Council of the City of Chicago shall be approved if there is any alteration, addition or substitution to the names of Soldier Field, the campus grounds or associated monuments.
