RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania was rocked by the deadly anti-Semitic assault on the Tree of Life of synagogue on October 27, 2018 while the Tree of Life, Dor Hadash, and New Light Jewish congregations were celebrating morning Shabbat services; and,

WHEREAS, the paranoid, internet-fueled fears of a deranged gunmen took the lives of eleven individuals, injuring six others which included four law enforcement officers, making this the deadliest anti-Semitic attack in American history; and,

WHEREAS, Joyce Fienberg of Oakland, Richard Gottfried of Ross Township, Rose Mallinger of Squirrel Hill, Jerry Rabinowitz of Edgewood, Cecil Rosenthal along with his brother David Rosenthal of Squirrel Hill, Bernice & Sylvan Simon of Wilkinsburg, Daniel Stein of Squirrel Hill, Melvin Wax of Squirrel Hill, Irving Younger of Mt. Washington are the victims of the tragedy; and,

WHEREAS, the Chicago Commission on Human Relations reports that hate crimes are up 71% in the City of Chicago, specifically against our African American and Jewish residents; and,

WHEREAS, the Anti-Defamation League, according to recent WTTW reporting, states that there has been a 430% increase in anti-Semitic incidents in Illinois between 2016 to 2021; and,

WHEREAS, recent comments by Kanye West and others have sparked new waves of internet- and social media-based anti-Semitism across the nation; now therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHICAGO, that we, the Members ofthe City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered here this 26th day of October, 2022, to remember and honor the Tree of Life, Do...
