HONORARY RESOLUTION

 

WHEREAS, after 33 years of devoted service, Jacqueline "Jackie" Hui is retiring from her position as Branch Manager ofthe Rogers Park Branch ofthe Chicago Public Library; and

 

WHEREAS, the Rogers Park Branch of the Chicago Public Library is a vital part of our community, providing a comfortable and convenient place to read, learn, and discover and where members of our community can talk and exchange ideas; and

 

WHEREAS, Jackie Hui has transformed our branch library from a book exchange into a neighborhood learning center, and as Branch Manager, she has been passionate and compassionate advocate for our library; and

 

WHEREAS, under Jackie's leadership the Rogers Park Library is one of the busiest library branches in the City, ranking within the top 10 among 80 locations of the Chicago Public Library in patron traffic, book circulation, computer usage and program attendance; and

 

WHEREAS, Jackie has closely worked with the Friends of the Rogers Park Library to augment our library's budget to acquire more books, equipment and innovative programs to promote life-long learning and advocated for a newer and larger library that opened in 1999 that has provided a more attractive and comfortable space for these resources; and

 

WHEREAS, along with these improvements, Jackie fostered community, participation to support of our library that includes working with volunteers to run book sales that raised additional funds for the library, engaging our community through the participatory budgeting process to replace worn and torn carpeting with new carpet tiles and to install automatic door openers, and advocated for the repair of a persistently leaky roof and upgrade the ventilation system to improve indoor air quality; and

 

WHEREAS, Jackie ensured our library ran smoothly and made sure the building was safe for her staff and library users and has worked additional rotations at the Reference Desk when other staff members could not, and even made our library safer from the COVID-19 pandemic with additional funds from the Friends of the Rogers Park Library to purchase and install plexiglass shields to protect staff and library users at the Circulation and Reference Desks; and

 

WHEREAS, Jackie consistently improved library service, by continually updating our library's books and media collections and inspiring our staff to serve with passion and dedication; .recently, she mentored a new library associate who now runs the Rogers Park Teen Center that has started to improve technology literacy of our high school students; she has also successfully applied for and implemented a federal grant for prompting literacy throughout our community by

 

 

establishing a sophisticated tutoring program and developed a special book collection to improve adult literacy for many in our community; and

 

WHEREAS, Jackie enriched Rogers Park with cultural and educational activities by hosting musicians, actors, and teachers at our library and eagerly provided space for events and activities to allow our neighbors to appreciate and enjoy our library's musical, literary, and educational efforts; and

 

WHEREAS, Jackie is fondly remembered as a gracious leader who respected her staff and has engaged their intellect and creativity; she has encouraged the personal and professional growth of all staff members, creating a hospitable, agile team ready to serve the ever-changing needs of our community; and

 

WHEREAS, Jackie has ensured that our library will continue to be a center for educational, social and cultural activities of Rogers Park that welcomes all for years to come; and

 

WHEREAS, Alderwoman Maria E. Hadden, the Rogers Park community, and all neighbors in the 49th Ward will forever be grateful for Jackie's dedicated service for all who use the Rogers Park Branch Library, and will miss Jackie's devotion to our Rogers Park Branch Library; and

 

BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this fourteenth day of December, 2022, do hereby thank Jackie Hui for her service, dedication, and leadership to the Chicago Public Library system, that has impacts has reverberated throughout the Rogers Park community; and
