A City Council Resolution Honoring the Life of Catherine Cosby


WHEREAS, Almighty God in His infinite wisdom and judgment has called Catherine Cosby an outstanding citizen of the City of Chicago, to her everlasting reward and returned to the heavenly realm on October 21, 2022; and

WHEREAS, This august Chicago City Council body has been informed of her passing by the Honorable Michelle A. Harris, Alderman ofthe 8th Ward; and

WHEREAS, Catherine Cosby was bom on February 23, 1934 in Chicago, Illinois from the union of Calso and Maggie Mae (nee Johnson) Earls. To this union, Catherine was one of 7 children, Allene, Anna "Bunch", Dorothy, Calso Jr. "Sonny", Jerry, and Charles, who all preceded her in death; and

WHEREAS, Catherine attended St. Elizabeth Catholic Elementary and High School. While in elementary school, she was baptized into the Catholic faith which she cherished. After high school, she worked at Spiegel department store in what is now Bridgeport; and

WHEREAS, On October 11, 1954, Catherine married Bernard Cosby, whom she loved dearly until death did they part in July of 1996. From this union 7 children were born, Deborah (preceded Catherine in death), Sharon, Alan, Russell, Steven (Mary), Susan (Brandon), and Paul (Stephanie); and

WHEREAS, Catherine and Bernard raised their children on the southside of Chicago and she ensured that her children also received a Catholic education at St. Elizabeth Elementary School. Catherine had a welcoming loving spirit with all who met her. Upon meeting her, she quickly became a revered mother or grandmother figure, and was affectionately called Momma Cosby. She will be well remembered for her homemade cakes and cookies, especially her Gerrman chocolate cake at Christmas; and

WHEREAS, Catherine leaves behind a legacy of fourteen grandchildren, Annette, Alan, Russell, Curtis, Brenton, Cory, Arland "Jay", Shanta "Diana", Tiara (who she affectionately called "Professor"), Braxton (who she affectionately called "Peabo"};...
