ORDINANCE


BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CiTY OF THE CITY OF CHICAGO


SECTION 1: Pursuant to an ordinance heretofore passed by the City Council which allows erection of honorary street signs, the Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Transportation shall take necessary action for standardization of West 33rd Street from South Wallace Street to South Parnell Avenue as "Joe Harris Way".

SECTION 2: This ordinance shall take effect upon its passage and publication.

Joseph "Joe Harris" Hawrysz Biography



Joseph Hawrysz, known to many as Joe Harris, was born on July 18, 1934 in Bridgeport. He and his wife, Georgiann, continue to reside in the same neighborhood, not far from where he grew .up. Hawrysz started using the surname Harris in the 1950's when he played basketball for Loyola University because, according to him, it was easier to pronounce and fit better on the back of his jersey. In 1955, he married Georgiann and together they raised their five children in Bridgeport. In 1961, Hawrysz bought the hardware store located at 3301 S Wallace Ave. For 60 years he owned and operated Joe Harris Hardware. Patrons of his store appreciated the personal touch, project expertise, and friendship that differentiated Joe Harris Hardware from the big box stores that were located nearby.
