MEMORIAL RESOLUTION CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF JUANITA E. PEOPLES

 

WHEREAS, Juanita E. Peoples, active community volunteer and loving wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away on December 28, 2022; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of Juanita's passing by the Honorable Derrick Curtis, Alderman ofthe 18th Ward; and

WHEREAS, Juanita was born on April 18, 1938, to the late Bessie and Lucious McCoy in Stuttgart, Arkansas; and

WHEREAS, After graduating from Central High School in Parkin, Arkansas, Juanita moved to Chicago, Illinois in 1956; and

WHEREAS, Juanita was united in holy matrimony to Lathie Peoples in March of 1960, and their union was blessed with two children; and

 

WHEREAS, Juanita's first job in Chicago was at Spiegel Department Store; after leaving Spiegel she was employed by Cook County Hospital in the medical records department until she chose to retire in 1989 to care for her first-born grandchild; and

WHEREAS, Juanita had a passion for cooking - even coming out of retirement to work part-time for Jewel in the catering department - believing food should both taste good and look good; graced with a green thumb, her garden was always full of beautiful flowers and vegetables; and

WHEREAS, Always a source of friendly conversation and wisdom, Juanita enjoyed talking to everyone she met, whether she knew them or not, and she was always prepared to dispense sound advice, encouragement, or just a listening ear; her family and friends will never forget her sayings, including: "buy your umbrella while it's sunny outside", "make a dollar save a dime", "Slick Willies always get caught", and "I can show you better than I can tell you"; and

 

WHEREAS, A true treasure to the community, Juanita believed in community service and was an active volunteer in the 18th Ward Alderman's Office and the 18th Ward Democratic Organization; and

 

WHEREAS, Juanita was preceded in death by her loving husband of 59 years, Lathie; Juanita is survived by her loving daughters Valerie Kim Peoples and Sheryl Peoples-Johnson (Terence); beloved grandchildren Garrett and Morgan; great-granddaughter Zoey; sister Shirley Bryant and brother-in-law Willie Boyd; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends; and

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the Members ofthe City Council ofthe City of Chicago gathered here this eighteenth day of January 2023, do hereby extend our condolences to the family and friends of Juanita E. Peoples; and
