ORDINANCE


WHEREAS, Chicago is home to thousands of churches and other religious congregations and institutions, and excessive noise seriously impacts the exercise of religious rights and spiritual worship; and

WHEREAS, Chicago is also home to nearly 1,000 public and private schools and educational institutions, and the World Health Organization has found that excessive noise disrupts the learning experience, leading to poorer reading ability, memory, and academic performance; and

WHEREAS, Section 8-32-060 of the Municipal Code of Chicago authorizes the City Council, in consultation with the Chicago Police Department and the Department of Public Health, to designate areas where noise sensitive activities take place as "noise sensitive zones", including hospitals, schools, churches, public libraries, and nursing homes; and
WHEREAS, It is essential to the health and welfare of the residents of Chicago that these sensitive areas be protected from excessive noise; now, therefore

BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHICAGO:
SECTION 1. The foregoing recitals are hereby incorporated as the findings ofthe City of Council of the City of Chicago, and are incorporated herein.
SECTION 2. Section 8-32-065 ofthe Municipal Code of Chicago is hereby amended by inserting the language underscored, as follows:

8-32-065 Designated noise sensitive zones.

The following locations are designated as noise sensitive zones pursuant to section 8-
32-060:

Superior Street, between North Dearborn Street and North Rush Street.
North State Street, between Huron Street and Pearson Street.
Chicago Avenue, between North Dearborn Street and North Rush Street.
North Wabash Street, between East Huron Street and East Pearson Street.
