Committee on Environmental Protection & Energy
RESOLUTION
A resolution calling for a public hearing regarding the record breaking utilities rate hikes by ComEd and Peoples Gas that were filed with the Illinois Commerce Commission in January of 2023.
Record breaking rate hikes from both of Chicago's Electric and Gas Utilities were filed earlier this month with the Illinois Commerce Commission. People's Gas, for the first time since 2014, has called for a hike of $402 million. Similarly, a week after the announcement ComEd filed their own rate hike with the ICC: $1.5 billion over the next four years.
We call for a public hearing that explains the relevant information and call on the city council to invite the Illinois Commerce Commission to present their process and decision on the whether they will accept the ComEd and People's Gas proposed rate hikes.
We ask that the Committee on Environmental Protection & Energy host these discussion and to work with relevant city agencies to update and inform the city council on these two unprecedented rate hikes.
