MEMORIAL RESOULTION CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF JOAN HADAC

WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that members of this chamber and her many friends, family, and neighbors learned of the death of Joan Hadac on May 5, 2023. Let us gather to honor Joan on her many years of tireless service to her community; and

WHEREAS, Joan Hadac, was a lifelong Southwest Side resident who died at home in hospice care three months after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She was 63 years old. Mrs. Hadac's work earned acclaim, including a nomination for the prestigious Lisagor Award for a story she wrote examining racial change in Gage Park through the prism of religion. Born Joan Heelan on Sept. 4, 1959, she grew up mostly in the Gage Park neighborhood, graduating from St. Clare of Montefalco School in 1973 and Lourdes High School in 1977 and St. Xavier College in 1984

WHEREAS, Joan Hadac was married to Tim Hadac in 1985. She had met Tim at St. Xavier College who was a fellow student journalist and her future husband and love of her life. They were married at St. Clare of Montefalco Church.

WHEREAS, Mrs. Hadac took a break from community journalism from 1991-98 to bear and raise the couple's two daughters, Johanna Grace and Mary Sheila. For the rest of her days, she would refer to that time as the best seven years of her life.

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago gathered here this 24lhday of May, do hereby honor the life and memory of Joan Hadac and extend to her family and many friends our sincere condolences and;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be prepared and presented to the family of Joan Hadac as a sign of our honor and respect.
