RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, On the morning of March 27, 2023, in Nashville, Tennessee, a mass shooting occurred at the Covenant School, where seven people were killed, including three nine-year old children and three staff members; and
WHEREAS, Officer Rex Engelbert, one of the lead Nashville officers who took down the shooter, grew up in Chicago's Jefferson Park neighborhood; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of Rex's bravery by the Honorable Samantha Nugent, Alderman of the 39th Ward; and
WHEREAS, Officer Engelbert had not been scheduled for duty at the time of the shooting and was coming in to handle the administrative tasks of his job when he received a radio call that there was an active shooter at the school; and
WHEREAS, Though not assigned to the team, Officer Engelbert, a four-year veteran of the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD), worked together with his fellow first responders as they quickly prepared and entered the school, knowing that every second wasted could cost lives; and
WHEREAS, Described by his older brother Kevin Engelbert as a "gentle giant" who has "always [been] there for those in need", Officer Engelbert's courage and selflessness saved lives on that day; and
WHEREAS, While Officer Engelbert has already been commended by the Fort Worth Police Officers' Association for displaying "courage in the face of evil", the City of Chicago would also like to recognize Officer Engelbert and the great debt owed to all public servants who put themselves in harm's way; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered here the thirty-first day of May 2023, do hereby honor Metropolitan Nashville Police Officer Rex Engelbert for his display of bravery in the face of danger; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be prepared and presented to Metropolitan Nashville Police Officer Rex Engelbert as a sign of our honor and respect.
