WHEREAS the City of Chicago is home rule unit of government pursuant to the 1970 Illinois Constitution, Article VII, Section 6 (a); and
WHEREAS, pursuant to its home rule power, the City of Chicago may exercise any power and perform any function relating to its government and affairs including promoting the health, welfare and safety of its citizens; and
WHEREAS, police beats in the City of Chicago have not been adjusted since 1978 however population, crime statistics, and crime patters have changed over the past 30 years
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHICAGO:
SECTION 1. The above recitals are expressly incorporated herein and made part hereof as though fully set forth herein
SECTION 2. Chapter 2-84 of the Municipal Code of Chicago has the following language added as follows:
Subject to the rules of the department and the instruction of the board, said superintendent shall have the power and duty:
(10) To present to the Committee of Police and Fire a recommendation for the
adjustment of the 25 police districts and 281 police beats within six (6) months upon the release of local census data by the US Census Bureau of each decennial census.
SECTION 3. This ordinance shall be in full force and effect after its passage.
