^QhcfBttS ' °n tne ni9nt of September 23, 2010, a woman living on West Dickens Avenue in Lincoln Park awoke to the terrifying realization that two men were burglarizing her apartment; and
WHEREAS, One ofthe men entered her bedroom, threatened her and began to sexually assault her, telling her he would kill her unless she did what he told her. Daring not to scream because of his threats, she was forced to endure his assault. The other man fled the apartment with some of her property, dropping items as he ran; and
WHEREAS, At about 11:30 p.m., a neighbor noticed some property strewn about the apartment hallway, and reported it to 9-1 -1. 18th District Chicago Police Officers Cynthia M. Miura (Star #7181), and Patrick R. Strelczyk (Star #13214) responded to the call moments later, and discovered a purse lying on the back stairs, along with a variety of other items; and
WHEREAS, The officers did not see any damage to windows or doors, but saw an open window on the first floor and, sensing that something was not right, proceeded to investigate to ensure the occupants were not in distress; and
WHEREAS, The officers called through the window, but heard no response. They continued their inquiry, announcing their office as they entered the apartment, and asking if everyone was okay. Upon hearing the officers, the desperate victim screamed for help from the bedroom where she was being held by the offender; and
WHEREAS, Officers Miura and Strelczyk ran to the bedroom, where they found the victim and the offender in bed. The offender tried to flee, but Officers Miura and Strelczyk immediately seized him and placed him under arrest, ending the assault; and
WHEREAS, The victim was quickly taken to a nearby hospital and given medical attention, and the offender was taken to the station to be processed; and
WHEREAS, Fingerprints taken at the scene led to the arrest of a second offender with the victim's stolen car, and a later investigation revealed that the offenders were not only involved in this home invasion, but also another burglary just down the street; and
WHEREAS, Thanks to the keen instincts and dedication to duty shown by Officers Miura and Strelczyk, a violent offender was taken into custody without incident, and the victim of a violent, sordid attack was rescued; and
WHEREAS, The victim of this horrific ordeal might not be alive today if it were not for the decisive intervention of Police Officers Cynthia M. Miura and Patrick R. Strelczyk, who, in keeping with the highest traditions of the Chicago Police Department, performed their jobs courageously, flawlessly and with outstanding results; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and Members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled this ninth day of February, 2011, do hereby applaud Chicago Police Officers Cynthia M. Miura and Patrick R. Strelczyk for their professionalism, valor and exceptional efforts on behalf ofthe citizenry of Chicago; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be presented to Chicago Police Officers Cynthia M. Miura and Patrick R. Strelczyk, and placed on permanent record in each of their personnel files, as a token of our appreciation and esteem.
