Be It Ordained by the City Council of the City of Chicago:
SECTION 1. That the Commissioner of Buildings, the Executive Director of Construction and Permits, the Commissioner of Transportation, the Commissioner of Streets and Sanitation, the Commissioner of Environment, the Commissioner of Fire, the Director of Business Affairs & Licensing, the Director of Revenue and the Commissioner of Water Management, are hereby directed to issue all necessary permits, all on-site water/sewer inspection fees and all water/sewer plan review fees, free of charge, notwithstanding other ordinances of the City of Chicago to the contrary, to Gildas Club Chicago, a not-for-profit Illinois corporation, related to the construction and maintenance of building(s) at said location(s):
537 North Wells, Chicago, Illinois 60654
Said building(s) and all appurtenances thereto shall be used exclusively for charitable purposes and shall not be leased or otherwise used with a view to profit, and the work thereon shall be done in accordance with the plans submitted and all of the appropriate provisions of the Municipal Code of the City of Chicago and departmental requirements of various departments of the City of Chicago, and said building(s) and all appurtenances thereto shall be constructed and maintained so that they shall comply in all respects with the requirements of the appropriate provisions of the Municipal Code of the City of Chicago for the issuance of all necessary permits and licenses.
SECTION 2. Gildas Club Chicago, a not-for-profit Illinois Corporation, engaged in medical, educational and related activities, shall be exempt from the payment of City license fees and shall be entitled to the cancellation of warrants for collection of inspection fees.
SECTION 3. Gildas Club Chicago shall be entitled to a refund of City fees which it has paid and from which it is exempt pursuant to Sections 1 and 2 of this ordinance.
SECTION 4. This ordinance shall be in force for the period of May 1, 2011 through April 30, 2013

As background, Gilda's Club Chicago's mission is to create ' support for everyone living with cancer — men, women, teens families and friends. The Club's philosophy is that a diagnosis of cancer brings with it potential for insight and compassion that can be tapped and shared with others to the benefit of all. Gilda's Club embraces the entire family living with cancer by creating welcoming communities that offer social and emotional support for those living with cancer. Members, whether they are people with cancer or family and friends, choose the activities that they are comfortable with and incorporate them into their Customized Membership Plan, developed individually with a licensed mental health professional. | |
The project we have planned is a redesign of the top floor of our four-story Club located at 537 North Wells Street. Our architectural firm is Gensler, and this world-class firm has offered design services and project management pro bono. Our construction firm is JAMM Development, which is owned by Gilda's Club and Associate Board member John Dunnett. Our eoal is to shift to a new standard in office design to accommodate a more collaborative work environment providing a larger, more open work environment for everyone.
