BfBQS , Just before 8 p.m. on the evening of August 14, 2010, 10th District Tactical Officers Anthony L. Ceja (Star #3161) and Kevin C. Deeren (Star #9721) were on patrol when they heard a call of "shots fired" near Douglas Park on the City's Southwest side; and

WHEREAS, As the Officers rushed to the area they monitored their radios and received an additional call of "man with a gun," with a description of the offender; and

WHEREAS, As they got closer, the Officers saw a man who matched the description, running down the street with a handgun in his hand. The gunman then jumped into the passenger seat of a waiting vehicle and fled the location; and

WHEREAS, The Officers turned on their lights and siren, but the vehicle sped away. As the Officers pursued, the vehicle abruptly came to a stop in an alley underneath a CTA elevated platform near 19th Street and Kedzie Avenue; and

WHEREAS, The offender then got out of the vehicle, gripping his handgun, and pointed it directly at Officer Deeren. Both Officers, in fear for their safety, fired at the gunman, striking him once in the leg; and

WHEREAS, The offender fell to the ground and dropped his weapon. The Officers rushed forward and, together with other responding officers, took the man into custody and recovered his gun, a loaded Ruger P90.45 caliber semi-automatic handgun; and

WHEREAS, The offender, a three-time convicted felon, was subsequently charged with the Aggravated Assault of a Peace Officer and Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon. As a result of these brave Officers' efforts, another deadly weapon and a dangerous felon were removed from the streets of Chicago; now, therefore,
