TO THE HONORABLE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHICAGO
Ladies and Gentlemen:
I transmit herewith a resolution honoring the life and memory of Joan Steif Freehling. Your favorable consideration of this resolution will be appreciated.
|1010|RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Members of this Chamber were deeply saddened to learn ofthe death on April 16, 2011, at age 84, of Joan Steif Freehling, a devoted civic leader and writer; and
WHEREAS, Born in Chicago on December 10,1926, Mrs. Freehling was raised in Glencoe, Illinois, graduated from New Trier Township High School and attended Scripps College in Claremont, California; and
WHEREAS, A distinguished leader and champion of the arts, Mrs. Freehling generously gave of her time to serve on the women's boards of the Goodman Theater, the Art Institute of Chicago, the University of Chicago and Northwestern University, and as a board member of the Cradle Foundation and the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago; and
WHEREAS, Serving with honor and distinction as a life trustee of the Ravinia Festival for over four decades, Mrs. Freehling was instrumental in the successes of several major innovations and projects of Ravinia; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Freehling was the editor of the Ravinia Women's Board cookbook, Noteworthy: A Collection of Recipes from the Ravinia Festival, which through her exceptional writing, organizational, leadership, and designing skills, became a classic cookbook with five editions and well over 100,000 copies in sales, generating a gift of $1,000,000 to Ravinia from the Women's Board; and
WHEREAS, Although Mrs. Freehling will be dearly missed, the impact of her kindness and many good deeds will continue to inspire others, and her memory will live on in the hearts of those who were privileged to know her; and
WHEREAS, A truly exemplary human being, Mrs. Freehling will always be remembered for her dedication to civic and philanthropic causes, her...
