RESOLUTION HONORING THE LIFE OF LACY GIBSON
WHEREAS, With a career spanning more than 50 years, the legendary Lacy Gibson passed away on April 11, 2011, leaving behind a legacy that will forever influence modern blues and many genres of music; and
WHEREAS, Lacy Gibson was born in Salisbury, North Carolina, on May 1, 1936; his family moved frequently until they settled in Chicago, Illinois. It was here where Gibson developed his musical genius, playing and learning from people such as T-Bone Walker, Lefty Bates, Buddy Guy, and other musical legends. Gibson's unpredictable, fierce guitar style alongside his impassioned vocals gave notoriety to his talent; and
WHEREAS, Gibson performed and toured throughout Europe with Sonny Seals, further establishing his name and allowing him to record with Brice Iglauer on the "Living Chicago Blues" series. Moreover, Lacy was noted for working with Grammy winning artist Willie Dixon, and even played the character of Muddy Waters in a movie dedicated to Dixon's life. Lacy traveled with Billy Emerson and Albert Collins, Arbee Stidham at the 1982 Chicago Jazz Festival, and created an album with influential rhythm and blues producer Ralph Bass; and
WHEREAS, Incorporating pop and jazz influences into his music enabled Lacy's career to thrive into the 21st Century. More recently, Lacy assisted in operating and playing sets at a club on Chicago's West Side called Ann's Love Nest, continuing to leave his audiences in admiration of his unique style. The club was named after his wife, who survives alongside his son, five daughters, 17 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
WHEREAS, The Honorable Robert W. Fioretti, Alderman of the 2nd Ward, has apprised this august body of Lacy Gibson's significant contributions, now therefore
BE IT RESOLVED That we, the mayor and members of the City of Chicago Council, assembled here this 4h Day of May, 2011 AD, do hereby pay homage to Lacy Gibson and his artistic musical talents.
