TRIBUTE TO THE LIFE OF ALEX DANIEL THOMAS
WHEREAS, Almighty God, in His Infinite Wisdom, has granted Alex Daniel Thomas eternal life on March 6, 2011; and
WHEREAS, Alex Daniel was born in Cruger, Mississippi on March 13, 1923 and was the fourth child born to Angus and Jencie Thomas. He was affectionately known as his "Momma's Baby". Alex attended Mt. Olive Grammar and High School in Mt. Olive Community of Lexington, Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, A devout Christian, Alex was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church at a young age and participated joyously with the congregation. He and the late Matilda McGee were united in Holy matrimony on December 24, 1942 and were blessed with four children, Janie, Marie, Delbert and Norman; and
WHEREAS, The Thomas Family moved to Chicago in the early 1950's. He worked as a welder for General Motors Electro-Motors Division, building trains. Before his retirement in 1995, Alex mastered the skill of robotic welding. He was a member of UAW Local 719 and had been a dedicated employee for thirty years; and
WHEREAS, Alex Daniel Thomas was united in marriage to Josephine Johnson and to this union one son, Lester and two step daughters Geraldine Black and Cynthia Johnson-Lyles completed this family; and
WHEREAS, Alex Daniel Thomas served his country proudly in the United States Army in Japan during World War II; and
WHEREAS, His first wife, Matilda, brothers, Booker and Billy; sisters, Lemmie James, and Mellene Kinney; and Papa Angus and Momma Jencie having predeceased him Alex Daniel Thomas leaves to mourn his passing and cherish his memory, his five children, Janie Thomas, Marie Owens, Delbert Thomas, Norman Thomas and Lester Thomas; two stepdaughters, Geraldine Black and Cynthia Johnson-Lyles; ten grandchildren, eight great grandchildren; favorite nephew, Angus Thomas; special and devoted friend, German Taylor and a host of other relatives and many friends; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable JoAnn Thompson, Alderman of the 16th Ward, has informed this ...
