RESOLUTION HONORING CHICAGO POLICE CAPTAIN THOMAS
MCMAHON
WHEREAS, Chicago Police Captain Thomas McMahon has been a member of the Chicago Police Department for 37 years, fulfilling his duty in such capacity to serve and protect the residents of the City of Chicago; and;
WHEREAS, Captain McMahon has been assigned over the course of his years of service to the 5th District ofthe Chicago Police Department, located in the Pullman neighborhood of Chicago, where he also resided as member of this community with his wife, Cynthia and children, Michael and Katie, and;
WHEREAS, Captain McMahon has received numerous awards and commendations during his service, including being named officer of the month in 1979, based on the actions he took to prevent an armed gunman from perpetuating further mayhem and violence upon the community that Captain McMahon was then serving, and;
WHEREAS, during his tenure Captain McMahon, while serving as Gang Crimes Specialist with the Chicago Police Department was assigned to investigate, and therefore played a pivotal role in dismantling, the El Rukin Street gang, including assisting and implementing joint city and federal strategies and tactics to dismember and defeat said street gang, as well as testifying during the federal prosecution of the leadership of said street gang, resulting in their conviction and long-term incarceration, and;
WHEREAS, Captain McMahon has been a leading instructor and teacher distilling knowledge and strategies in the effort to combat street gangs in the City of Chicago, including teaching positions at the Chicago Police Academy, Chicago State University, and multiple institutions and cities across the United States of America, and;
WHEREAS, Captain McMahon in November 2010 while off duty and three days shy of his retirement date, sought to apprehend armed individuals who were suspected of having just shot and killed a citizen, and who then fired multiple shots at Captain McMahon while fleeing the scene of the shooting, and;
WHEREAS, The Honorable Robert W. Fioretti, Alderman of the 2nd Ward, has apprised this august body of the significant achievements and service of Captain Thomas McMahon to the Chicago Police Department and our residents; now therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members of the City of Chicago City Council, assembled this 18th day of May, 2011 A.D, do hereby commend and honor Thomas McMahon for his valiant efforts and service to protect the citizens of the City of Chicago, and his 37 year tenure now culminating in his retirement as an honored Captain of the Chicago Police Department.
