RESOLUTION HONORING JOURNALIST LINDA YU
WHEREAS, Linda You was born in Xian, China, and moved with her family to Hong Kong when she was two years old. Her family immigrated to the United States three years later, first to Pennsylvania, then to Indiana and later to California ; and
WHEREAS, She graduated from the University of Southern California with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism in 1968, and began her career in California and Oregon before she came to Chicago in the late 1970s and worked for WMAQ-TV; and
WHEREAS, Linda Yu is one of Chicago's most respected and well-known television journalists. She joined ABC 7 Chicago in 1984 and was inducted into the prestigious Silver Circle of legendary Chicago broadcasters by the Chicago and Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences; and
WHEREAS, During her distinguished career, Linda Yu has earned five local Emmy wards, including the recent Emmy for her contributions to the primetime special "Chicago's Road to China," which explored the local connections to the growing Asian economy. She was also honored with an Emmy for her work covering the aftermath of the Terrorist Attacks of September 11, 2001; and
WHEREAS, Other notable accomplishments during her career include a 1987 Emmy for Outstanding Achievement within a Regularly Scheduled News Program and Spot Coverage. She was also honored with a national Gold Medal from the National Conference of Community and Justice for her 1984 documentary "The Scars of Belfast"; and
WHEREAS, Linda Yu will be honored during the annual luncheon of the Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans on Thursday, May 19, with the committee's Dante Award for accomplishment in journalism. The award is given to journalists who exemplify Dante's credo: "Be No Timid Friend to Truth"; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Robert W. Fioretti, Alderman of the 2nd Ward, has apprised this august body of the accomplishments of Linda Yu and her intent to accept the Dante Award; now ...
