RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE 65"' ANNIVERSARY OF NEW LANDMARK MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH
WHEREAS, On May 13, 1946, Landmark Missionary Baptist Church was organized under the leadership of Reverend Grant Tilford, starting out with approximately 25 members, four deacons, and three trustees. The church purchased its first building at 1751 W. Lake St., and, from then on, was able to further spread its message of worship and love for Jesus Christ; and
WHERAS, In 1953, Landmark was able to acquire a larger space on the corner of Wilcox and Washtenaw, and continue to flourish under the leadership of Pastor Reverend Joseph Sylvester. In November 1993, California Avenue, from Lake Street to Ogden, was renamed "Reverend Dr. Joseph Sylvester Street" to honor the many services that his church provided for the community; and
WHEREAS, The ministry today is led by Pastor Cy Fields, who has implemented and continued programs that benefit the congregation and all people within the community such as grief counseling, performing arts activities, scholarships for high-school age students planning to attend college, and youth ministry for young people who aspire to strengthen their connection with God; and
WHEREAS, New Landmark provides regular breakfasts for the homeless, Thanksgiving food-drives, clothing giveaways, school supplies, and affordable rental living for struggling families. The church has stayed true to its mission to help people "win in life through God's Word, Great Worship, and Good Works."
WHEREAS, The Honorable Robert W. Fioretti, Alderman of the 2nd Ward, has apprised this august body of the significant contributions of the New Landmark Missionary Baptist Church to Chicago's West Side community, now therefore
BE IT RESOLVED That we, the mayor and members of the City of Chicago Council, on this 18h Day of May, 2011 AD, do hereby recognize the New Landmark Missionary Baptist Church for 65 years of worship and service.
